In this activity, you are asked to do the following:

Part 1:

 (a) Analyze Robert Silverman's Generation Gap Poem 

 

Part 2:

(b) Produce something of your own in relation to the poem.

 

Part 1: In this part of the activity, you are asked to do the following:

 

a)  Poetry analysis

·        Answer the first set of questions - i) The speakers and the situation (questions 1 - 4)

·        Choose ONE set of questions among the following:

 

ii) Setting, purpose, theme and tone

iii) Imagery and Symbolism

iv) Meter and rhyme

 

Answer all the questions in the set that you have chosen

i) The speakers and the situation

1.               Who are the speakers? What kind of people are the speakers?

2.               What is the occasion?

3.               Summarize the events of the poem.

4.               Paraphrase the poem.

 

ii) Setting, purpose, theme and tone

5.               What is the setting in time (hour, season, century, and so on)? 

6.               What is the setting in place (indoors or out, city or country, land or sea, region, nation, hemisphere)?

7.               What is the central purpose of the poem?

8.               State the central idea or theme of the poem in a sentence.

9.               Discuss the tone of the poem. How is it achieved?

 

iii) Imagery and Symbolism,

10.          Discuss the imagery of the poem. What kinds of imagery are used?

11.          Point out examples of metaphor, simile, personification, and metonymy and explain their appropriateness.

12.          Point out and explain any symbols. If the poem is allegorical, explain the allegory.

13.          Point out and explain examples of paradox, overstatement, understatement, and irony. What is their function?

14.          Point out and explain any allusions. What is their function?

 

 

iv) Meter and rhyme

15.          Discuss the diction of the poem. Point out words that are particularly well chosen and explain why.

16.          Point out significant examples of sound repetition and explain their function.

17.          a.  What is the meter of the poem?

b.  Mark its scansion.

18.          Discuss the adaptation of sound to sense.

19.          Describe the form or pattern of the poem.

 

 

Part 2: In this part of the activity, you are asked to do ONE the following TASKS:

 

(a) Criticize and evaluate the poem.

 

(b) Create a Power Point Presentation that is connected to the theme of the poem (The generation gap, mother-son / daughter relationship, or other). You may want to use photographs, drawings, music, sound effects, etc. The choice is yours.

 

(c) Create a photo story or a video clip. Upload it to You Tube (Remember: Think before you Post! - see the clip)

 

(d) Talk to your teacher and suggest a suitable alternative.
